What benefit is there in checking extension cords for damage instead of using them for years blindly?

Extension cords often sit behind furniture, half-crushed under chair legs, twisted, and stepped on. Over time, their outer layer cracks, internal wires can get exposed, or joints loosen. But because they’re mostly hidden, you forget about them.

A quick check—visually and by touch—can reveal cuts, burnt marks near plugs, or loose sockets that spark slightly. These are all signs that a cord should be repaired or replaced, not trusted.

Worn-out extensions can overheat and become a fire hazard. Replacing them is cheaper than dealing with the results of an electrical short.
