Small rooms without windows don’t get natural light to soften strong colours. Dark or very saturated shades can make them feel even smaller, cave-like, or slightly suffocating.
Soft, calm colours—off-whites, pale greys, gentle pastels—bounce whatever light you do add through fixtures. They give the illusion of a bit more space and air. You can still bring personality with artwork, cushions, rugs and furniture, but the walls themselves don’t close in on you.
It’s less about playing safe and more about respecting what the room can handle comfortably.
