Why is it better not to leave house keys under obvious mats or flowerpots near the door?

The “key under the mat” trick is about as secret as a social media trend now. Anyone who’s even slightly observant will check mats, obvious potted plants, or ledges when trying to break in.

If you must leave a spare key somewhere, it’s much safer to give it to a trusted neighbour or family member than to hide it a few centimetres from the lock itself. Otherwise, you’re basically doing half the thief’s work for them.

Convenience is nice, but not at the cost of giving away easy access to your entire home.
